Europeans are cautiously supportive. The latest Eurobarometer shows 56% are in favor of a bigger union. Nine countries are in the queue, including Ukraine, Moldova, and most of the Western Balkans.
For them, it means being part of a wider European family. For us, it means growing our influence. Combine that with some delicious borsch and ajvar, and it is a richer table for everyone.
But it’s not simple. Brussels continues to demand that candidates first tackle corruption and uphold the rule of law, critical conditions that cannot be ignored.
At the same time, leaving these countries in a gray zone risks ceding influence to Russia or China.
And while Ukraine is a big nation, most other candidates are small — like Montenegro, with 600,000 residents, or about the size of Antwerp.
But, as they say, this is not just about size. It’s about securing the European family. The question is not if the EU will grow, but how it will manage it.
And you? Would you support it?
