The SBB presented the latest night train in Zurich on Thursday. The new generation Nightjet travels between Zurich and Hamburg and is intended to offer more comfort.
The first new Nightjet was named “City of Zurich”, as the SBB announced on Thursday. Trains are now running between Zurich and Hamburg. They will also be gradually introduced on the routes to Amsterdam and Vienna from 2026.
According to the announcement, it is the most modern night train in Europe. In addition to sleeping and couchette cars, the Nightjet also offers so-called mini cabins for solo travelers.
The new night trains are an important contribution to making climate-friendly overnight travel more attractive, said the SBB. The aim is to further strengthen the international passenger transport offering.

Council of States against support
Night trains are controversial in politics. Only recently did the Council of States speak out against subsidizing the planned Zurich-Malmö connection. Next, the National Council decides on the deal. From spring 2026, the trains will run to southern Sweden – supported by 10 million francs from the federal government.
The number of night trains in Switzerland fell sharply in the 2010s, partly due to a lack of demand. The competition from cheap flights and new bus offers caused problems for the trains.
The debate about night trains flared up again with the discussion about climate protection. The Federal Parliament originally wanted to use 30 million francs per year for night trains. However, plans for connections to Barcelona and Rome were abandoned. (sda/ome)
