A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the coast of Japan. The authorities initially warned people about a possible huge wave, but then gave the all-clear.

The tsunami warning issued following a severe earthquake in northeastern Japan has been lifted. Although the region was shaken by an aftershock shortly afterwards, there was no danger for the residents, reported the television station NHK.

During the night, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurred off the coast of northern Aomori Prefecture, although it was around 54 kilometers deep, far below the earth’s surface. So far there have been reports of 30 injuries and a house fire, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said this morning. Apparently there was no major damage.
Videos are circulating on social media that are supposed to show the moments during the earthquake.

The meteorological authority initially warned of tsunami waves up to three meters high. The highest tidal wave observed reached the coast of Iwate Prefecture, reaching a height of about 70 centimeters, before the authority lifted the warning for the entire region in the morning. According to experts, an even stronger earthquake could occur in the next few days. Prime Minister Takaichi called on residents to remain vigilant. (sda/dpa/vro)
