After the violent death of “Harry and Sally” director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele, the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, is to be charged with double murder. This was announced by the public prosecutor in Los Angeles. The 32-year-old used a knife as a weapon, said District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman. Special circumstances would apply because of the double murder. If convicted, he could face life in prison and possibly the death penalty, Hochman said.
Nick Reiner is scheduled to appear in court for formal arraignment after completing a medical examination. The date for this was not yet known.
The 32-year-old was arrested on Sunday evening, around six hours after police discovered the murdered couple in their home in the Brentwood district.
Rob Reiner, director of hit films such as “Harry and Sally,” “Misery” and “A Question of Honor,” was 78 years old. There were different reports about the age of his wife Michele, who worked as a photographer, ranging from 65 to 70 years old. The couple, married since 1989, had three children together: Jake, Nick, and Romy. The director also adopted the daughter of his first wife, Penny Marshall. Son Nick had repeatedly spoken publicly about his struggle with drug addiction. (sda/dpa)
