New Delhi is drowning in smog – the air we breathe in the Indian capital and the surrounding area is now so bad that all primary school classes have to switch to distance learning. This is what the government has ordered for the Union Territory of Delhi.
Children, seniors and people with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases as well as other chronic illnesses are urged by the authorities not to go outdoors if possible.
Until further notice, the instructions for distance learning apply to all daycare centers as well as to school lessons up to the fifth grade at all state and recognized private schools, it said. The schools have been instructed to switch to online mode for the affected students. The remaining classes will continue to be taught in so-called hybrid mode – a mix of face-to-face classes and digital lessons.
The situation in the metropolitan region is classified as “serious” by the Air Quality Management Commission. The quality of breathing air in the Delhi metropolitan region has noticeably worsened in the past few days. The region was enveloped in a haze of fine dust, soot, sulfur dioxide and other gases. According to reports in the Hindustan Times newspaper, more than 60 flights were canceled on Monday due to fog and thick smog. (sda/dpa)
