According to media reports, seven people died when a business jet crashed in the US state of North Carolina. The reports relied on information from authorities. The Statesville Regional Airport also reported seven deaths on Facebook. It was initially unclear why the plane crashed in the eastern United States.

The Nascar sports association said on its website, citing the family of former Nascar racing driver Greg Biffle, that he died in the crash. In addition, his wife and the couple’s two children died. Nascar published a statement from the affected families of the seven people who died.
Crash on landing
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Cessna Type 550 crashed while landing at the regional airport on Thursday morning (local time). After the crash there was a fire. The Statesville Regional Airport is about an hour’s drive from the city of Charlotte. (dab/sda/dpa)
