According to the volcanology authority, the eruption began in the afternoon (local time). The ash column rose around two kilometers from the summit. At the same time, pyroclastic flows flowed down – avalanches of hot gas and rock that fell at high speeds down volcanic slopes. There was last a violent eruption at the end of 2022.
Highest mountain on the island of Java
At almost 3,700 meters, Semeru is the highest mountain on Indonesia’s most densely populated island of Java. It is located in the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park, which is popular with tourists for crater tours. The volcano is one of around 130 active fire mountains in the island state. Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the most geologically active zone on earth. (sda/dpa)
