A test flight of a Russian intercontinental ballistic missile went catastrophically wrong on Friday: The cruise missile exploded shortly after take-off at an altitude of around 200 to 400 meters, leaving a visible cloud of purple-red smoke. The incident occurred at the Yasny site, one of Russia’s fewer ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile) launch sites.
According to information from Defense Blog It is not yet clear what exact type of rocket it is. However, the color of the smoke trail is an indication that it is an intercontinental ballistic missile designed according to Soviet blueprints, especially since its toxic fuel causes such a color.
The Ukrainian News Outlet Defense News writes, however, that the false launch has similarities to the false launch of a Sarmat missile in 2024. The RS-28 Sarmat has been in development in Russia since 2009 and is touted by the Kremlin as a “next generation” missile.
A US Air Force surveillance plane flew to Alaska on Wednesday. Experts read from this that Russia would soon carry out a missile test, which the Americans wanted to witness.
