The power plant in the town of Al-Dabaa on the Mediterranean coast in the northwest of the country is being built with Russian help. The first reactor is scheduled to be commissioned in the second half of 2028. According to al-Sisi, an agreement for the purchase of nuclear fuel was also signed at the ceremony marking the installation of a pressure vessel. However, no information was provided about the scope of the agreement.

In a televised speech, Al-Sisi spoke of a dream that had come true “thanks to the strategic and stable relations between Egypt and Russia.” Once completed, the four nuclear reactors are expected to produce around ten percent of the energy required in the most populous Arab country with around 110 million people.

The construction of the first nuclear power plant in Egypt is progressing “successfully” thanks to Russian help, Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin said at the event. “In fact, we are now moving on to the most important stage of the technological equipment of the power plant and in the foreseeable future we will be able to start producing electricity necessary for the needs of the growing Egyptian economy,” Putin continued.
Only the day before, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had made a joint declaration during his visit to Washington to conclude negotiations for cooperation with the USA in the field of civil use of nuclear energy. (sda/dpa)
