The Mexican embassy in Peru’s capital Lima had granted asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, who is being investigated for allegedly aiding and abetting an attempted coup in 2022.

Mexico has repeatedly interfered in Peru’s internal affairs, according to a statement from the Peruvian Foreign Ministry. Granting Chávez diplomatic asylum is an unfriendly act and shows the Mexican government’s lack of interest in maintaining good relations between the two countries.
Chávez served as cabinet chief in the government of former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo, who was removed from office at the end of 2022 after a power struggle with Congress. He has been in custody since then on charges of an attempted coup. The former village school teacher was supported primarily by farmers and indigenous people, and the left-wing Mexican government is one of his allies. Castillo’s wife and children also currently live in Mexico. (sda/dpa)
