This took off from the US east coast city (local time) on Wednesday. According to the airline, cabin crew immediately responded to the situation, checked the door to ensure it was securely locked and reported the incident to relevant authorities and police.
No passengers or crew members were harmed. According to Cathay Pacific, the plane landed “safely” in Hong Kong early Thursday morning (local time).
Question about motive
When asked, the airline did not provide any further information about the suspected passenger. The Hong Kong newspaper “South China Morning Post” reported, citing the police, that it was a 20-year-old man from China. He is now accused of violating aviation safety regulations.
It was unclear why the man tried to open the door. According to the regulation, anyone who intentionally tampers with or interferes with components, devices or equipment of the aircraft or with systems installed in the aircraft on board an aircraft is committing a criminal offence. If convicted in a criminal case, the maximum penalty is two years in prison and a fine of 50,000 Hong Kong dollars (around 5,470 euros). (dab/sda/dpa)
