In Sudan, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia killed at least 1,013 civilians during its three-day offensive on the Samsam refugee camp in the spring, according to the United Nations. The new report from the UN Office for Human Rights states that the attack from April 11 to 13 displaced more than 400,000 camp residents.

The United Nations describes the war in Sudan, which has been ongoing since April 2023 and pits the Sudanese army and the RSF against each other, as the largest humanitarian crisis in the world. Twelve million people have been displaced by the fighting, and every second resident of the northeast African country is at risk of hunger. At the same time, the situation in Sudan receives significantly less international attention than, for example, the situation in the Gaza Strip.
The report by the UN Office for Human Rights lists killings, rape and other forms of sexual violence, torture and kidnappings during the three-day offensive on the camp. It is a constant pattern of “serious violations of international humanitarian law and massive violations of human rights”.
In the months leading up to the attack, the RSF blocked the entry of food, water, fuel and other goods into the camp and attacked those who tried to bring supplies, according to the report. In order to survive, many families gave their children animal food such as peanut shells. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, made an urgent appeal: “The world must not stand idly by and watch such cruelty become an everyday reality in Sudan.” (sda/dpa)
