A driver hit and injured several pedestrians and a cyclist in western France.
Two people are seriously injured, as France’s Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced on X. The suspect was arrested. Investigations were ongoing.
According to the gendarmerie, there were several traffic accidents with only one driver involved at around 8:45 a.m. in the municipality of Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron on an island on the French west coast. Passers-by and a cyclist were hit.
As Mayor Thibault Brechkoff said, the driver caused the accidents intentionally. Nine people were injured and were being treated by rescue workers. “All services are mobilized to deal with the situation.” A crisis team is being set up in the town of Dolus. The Interior Minister wanted to go to the scene of the incident.
Various media reported a total of ten injured.
Lots of open questions
According to media reports, the driver is said to have shouted “Allahu Akbar” – there are conflicting reports at the time. He then allegedly tried to set his car on fire. However, the man’s motive is still unclear and must be clarified as part of the investigation.
