A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the coast of Japan. The authorities are warning people about a possible huge wave.

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the northeast coast of Japan. The authorities published a tsunami warning, as reported by the Japanese newspaper “Asahi Shimbun”, among others. The quake occurred around 3:20 p.m. Swiss time.

As media reports, the epicenter is said to be around 80 kilometers off the Japanese coast and at a depth of around 50 kilometers. The southern coastal areas of the island of Hokkaido and the northeastern areas of Honshu, Japan’s largest island, are particularly at risk.
Nuclear power plants in the affected area initiated safety checks after the quake, it is said. Train services between Fukushima and Shin-Aomori were suspended. The government set up a task force and, according to media reports, several people were injured in a hotel.
