The Italian antitrust authority is taking action against Facebook parent company Meta for alleged abuse of a dominant market position. According to a statement, the competition authority AGCM imposed provisional measures and asked Meta to suspend contractual conditions that exclude other AI chatbots on the WhatsApp messenger service.
The investigation was initiated in July, the statement said. The company has integrated the Meta AI service into the app of the short messaging service WhatsApp, where it has an outstanding position compared to the services of other competitors. Italy is also coordinating with the European Commission to ensure that Meta’s behavior is addressed in an effective manner.
Meta: Decision is unfounded
Meta denied the allegations. The antitrust authority’s decision was unfounded, said a spokesman for the Italian news agency Ansa. The emergence of chatbots with artificial intelligence has put the system under pressure; it is not designed for this type of use. Meta will take action against the demands of the competition authority. (sda/awp/dpa)
