Iran’s judiciary has publicly executed a rapist. The sentence was carried out in Semnan province in the north-east of the country, the Misan news agency, which is linked to the judiciary, reported. The man was sentenced to death for raping two women in the city of Bastam.

Semnan’s justice chief Mohammed Sadegh Akbari said that “decisively dealing with crimes that violate public morality” and “threaten the moral and psychological security of society” are among the priorities of the provincial justice department.
Already in August, two men convicted of murder were executed near the crime scene. Public executions are actually rare in Iran. The death penalty in the Islamic Republic is usually carried out by hanging.
Human rights activists have been criticizing the rigorous use of the death penalty in Iran for years. They accuse the judiciary of using executions to intimidate critical voices. In 2025, more executions have been recorded than in 15 years. Amnesty International counted more than 1,000 executions at the end of September. (sda/dpa)
