Five people have died in a helicopter accident on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. According to the Tanzanian Civil Aviation Authority, it is not yet clear how the accident occurred.
The rescue helicopter team took two patients on board on Wednesday afternoon between the Barafu camp, located at an altitude of 4,000 meters, and the Kibo hut, it was said. The helicopter crashed over a glacier area. According to Tanzanian media reports, the patients are said to be Czech tourists. The pilot, a doctor and a mountain guide were also on board.
At almost 5,900 meters high, Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and attracts thousands of mountain tourists every year. The mountain is considered to be technically rather easy. However, summit tours often have to be stopped because mountaineers suffer from altitude sickness. (sda/dpa)
