According to pharmaceutical manufacturer Novo Nordisk, the popular weight loss drug Wegovy has been approved in pill form for the first time in the USA.

“With today’s approval of the Wegovy pill, patients have a convenient, once-daily pill available that allows them to lose just as much weight as with the original Wegovy injection,” said Novo Nordisk CEO Mike Doustdar on Monday (local time).

Wegovy, which was previously administered as a weekly injection, is one of the so-called GLP-1 medications. They regulate blood sugar levels and can thereby increase the feeling of satiety. GLP-1 drugs are used to treat type 2 diabetes and to help overweight and obese patients lose weight. Pharmaceutical companies have long been working on products in tablet form that are easier to use and cheaper. (sda/afp)
