The border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia has flared up again, even after US President Donald Trump’s latest attempts at mediation. In the morning, both the Thai and Cambodian armies reported attacks, including on civilian areas.
«Thailand will continue its military actions until we no longer see any danger or threat to our country and our people. I want to make that clear,” wrote Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Facebook. “Our actions this morning already speak for themselves.”
This significantly dampened hopes of an early ceasefire in the Southeast Asian conflict.
The day before, US President Donald Trump said after a telephone conversation with Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul that both heads of government had agreed to stop the fighting. It was agreed to “cease all hostilities from this evening”. However, it remained unclear which time zone he was referring to. At that point it was already night in the region. The two countries themselves did not confirm the agreement.
Fighting between Thailand and Cambodia has been going on for days. The background is a decades-long dispute over territorial claims. Both states accuse each other of first violating a ceasefire in the area along the approximately 800 kilometer long common border.
The fighting has forced more than 500,000 residents of the region to flee their homes and left more than 20 people dead, including several civilians. There were also hundreds injured as a result of the fighting. (sda/dpa)
