Syrian government troops and Kurdish fighters fought heavy battles in the Syrian city of Aleppo. Residents reported to the German Press Agency that heavy weapons had been used.
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), led by the Kurdish militia YPG, attacked security force positions, the Defense Ministry in Damascus said. It rejected allegations by the SDF that government troops had attacked their positions. The army only responded to the fire.
“Uncontrolled escalation”
The SDF said pro-government fighters had attacked a checkpoint. They described the incident as part of an “uncontrolled escalation” that threatened the lives of civilians and the security of the entire city and blamed the government in Damascus for it.
According to eyewitnesses, dozens of people left the area out of fear of further escalation. The state news agency reported that an ambulance also came under fire. Several people were injured. (sda/dpa)
