Amid severe tensions, cross-border fighting has broken out again between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The spokesman for the Islamist Taliban ruling Afghanistan wrote on Platform X that Pakistan had launched renewed attacks on Afghanistan in the evening. He wrote from the Spin Boldak district of the southern Afghan province of Kandahar, which lies directly on the border with Pakistan. This prompted the Afghan armed forces to respond.
A Pakistani border official in Baluchistan province confirmed mutual shelling to the German Press Agency.
There was initially no information on deaths or injuries. According to the Afghan news channel Tolonews, residents have left the affected areas on both sides.
The renewed border skirmishes follow a bloody conflict between the two countries that flared up in October. The Taliban blamed Pakistan for explosions in the capital Kabul in early October, after which Taliban security forces attacked Pakistani military checkpoints in Pakistan’s border provinces. Heavy fighting broke out.
Through the mediation of Qatar and Turkey, a ceasefire was agreed in October – but no comprehensive agreement was reached between the two neighboring countries. Islamabad accuses Kabul of providing protection to the Pakistan Taliban Movement (TTP), which has carried out repeated attacks in Pakistan. Kabul denies this. According to the Taliban, there were renewed Pakistani air strikes on Afghan soil at the end of last month. (sda/dpa)
