X has given up the name and the trademark rights should therefore be deleted, the company Operation Bluebird argued in an application to the American Patent and Trademark Office. X counters in a lawsuit that the start-up is “brazenly trying to steal the world-famous Twitter brand.”

Tech billionaire Musk bought Twitter a good three years ago for around $44 billion. He later renamed the platform X and consistently had all traces of the Twitter name erased. From Operation Bluebird’s perspective, this shows that X has no intention of using the old name and logo – and wants to have both for themselves. They said they were planning a website that would be called Twitter.new.
In return, X emphasized that the redesign of the website and app does not mean giving up the trademark rights to the Twitter name and logo. Musk’s company also pointed out that users continued to refer to posts as tweets instead of posts – and also continued to use the name Twitter. You can now secure usernames at Twitter.new. According to information on the website, more than 145,000 profile names have been requested so far. (sda/dpa)
