Shot at drones
On Friday evening, soldiers from the Dutch air force base in Volkel had already used weapons against drones flying over, as the Defense Ministry in The Hague announced. After the incident at the airfield not far from the city of Nijmegen near the German border, the missiles disappeared and were not seen again, it said. The ministry did not want to say how the drones were discovered and which weapons were specifically used against them “for security reasons”.

“Drones were spotted over the Volkel air base last night. Ground troops were deployed to shoot down the aircraft. The drones have disappeared and have not yet been found. The investigation is ongoing. Drones are not permitted on military grounds. We will take action if necessary.”
A spokesman for the Dutch gendarmerie, which is responsible for border protection, told the ANP news agency that the drones had been “shot at”. The incident is now being investigated by the police.
There have been repeated drone incidents in European airspace for months. Germany was also affected, including Munich airport. In order to prevent espionage, sabotage and possible attacks on people, the Bundeswehr should in future provide support in domestic drone defense – if necessary with armed force. This is provided for in a draft from the Federal Ministry of the Interior, which the cabinet recently approved. (dhr/sda/dpa)
