Several homes have been destroyed by bushfires on Australia’s southeast coast. The New South Wales state fire department said there were more than 50 fires on Saturday, most of which were under control.
However, a fire north of the metropolis of Sydney destroyed six houses, as the Australian broadcaster ABC reported. Several houses also burned down on the mid-north coast. A fire destroyed more than 9,000 hectares of land in the Goulburn River National Park.
The Australian Weather Service said that dry, warm winds are currently raising temperatures in New South Wales to almost 40 degrees. This fuels “this dangerous and extreme fire hazard”.
It is currently summer in Australia. Bushfires regularly occur in the country in the summer months. However, droughts and severe forest fires are increasing due to climate change.
