A bus driver was killed in an attack by basketball fans on a bus carrying fans of the opposing team near Rieti on Sunday evening. A stone went through the windshield and fatally hit the second driver on the passenger side.

The bus was on the Rieti-Terni highway on the way back to Tuscany after the Pistoia team won the Serie A2 away game against Sebastiani Rieti in Tuscany.
The 65-year-old from Florence died immediately, Italian media reported. The emergency services that arrived were only able to determine his death. Another stone hit the windshield in front of the first driver, damaging it but not breaking it. There were fans of the Pistoia team on board.

Some of Sebastiani Rieti’s supporters were reportedly responsible for the attack. There had already been tensions in the stands during the game on Sunday, which necessitated the deployment of law enforcement to separate the two fan camps. Investigations to clarify the incident and identify the masked perpetrators are ongoing.
Italy’s Sports Minister Andrea Abodi said on the X platform (formerly Twitter): “Today’s attack near Rieti, carried out by criminals who became murderers, is shocking. Such people can never be called fans.” (sda/dpa/apa)
