A two-year-old girl has died in a piranha attack after falling into a river in Brazil. The accident occurred last Monday near the town of Coari in the state of Amazonas.
In a moment of carelessness on the part of her parents, little Clara Vitória fell from a floating platform into the river where the family lives, reports the Brazilian TV station R7. This was not secured at the point where Clara fell into the water.
Girl succumbs to injuries
The parents initially didn’t notice what had happened. It was only when they discovered that their daughter had disappeared that they began to search. They went into the water and found the girl after about five minutes.
Clara was rescued from the river, but at this point she no longer showed any signs of life. According to the report, piranhas attacked the child in the water, particularly injuring her neck. The two-year-old died shortly after the attack.
Series of piranha attacks 2023
The fatal incident joins several piranha attacks that occurred in Brazil in 2023. According to local media, at least eight people were injured.
The attacks occurred at a beach resort in Tarumã-Açu, north of Manaus. Those affected were in the body of water during the Labor Day holiday when they suddenly felt severe pain in their feet and legs.
One affected person reported that she only realized which animal had attacked her after leaving the water. «When I came out of the water, I heard some people talking about piranhas and bites. I looked at my foot and recognized the bite mark,” said student Adaiany Monteiro to the G1 news channel. Pictures from the scene showed several people having their bleeding feet bandaged after being bitten.
