The Marxist-Leninist ELN – the abbreviation stands for National Liberation Army – has around 5,000 fighters under arms and is financed through kidnappings, drug trafficking and protection rackets. Colombia suffered 52 years of civil war between left-wing rebels, right-wing paramilitaries and the military. As a result of a peace agreement concluded in 2016 between the government and the largest rebel group, the FARC, the security situation in the country has improved, but parts of Colombia continue to be controlled by criminal groups. In January, President Gustavo Petro’s government broke off peace talks with the ELN after several deadly attacks on soldiers and FARC splinter groups. (sda/dpa)
