According to the authorities, 32 injured people were taken to hospitals on Sunday, but most of them have since been released. At least 70 houses and shops in the old town were flooded.
Safi is located about 300 kilometers south of the capital Rabat on the Moroccan Atlantic coast. Images on online networks showed muddy masses of water washing cars and garbage cans through the streets of the port city. Access roads were also impassable due to the flooding. The Moroccan weather service has predicted further heavy rain for Tuesday.
In Morocco, which has suffered from a severe drought for seven years, storms and floods are not uncommon in autumn and winter. But experts say climate change is causing precipitation to be more intense than in the past because a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture and higher ocean temperatures can intensify storms.
