“Honduras – I am ready to govern,” wrote Asfura on the news platform X after the result was announced. “I will not disappoint you.” Whoever wins the most votes in the election becomes president of the Central American country – there are no runoff elections planned.
Voting slips had to be checked due to irregularities
After the election on November 30th, the counting of votes took a long time. Finally, numerous voting forms had to be checked due to irregularities. Allegations of fraud were made from various political camps.
Before the vote, US President Trump intervened in the election campaign in favor of Asfura. If the ex-mayor of the capital Tegucigalpa wins, Honduras could count on the support of the USA, if not, Washington would not waste money, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Ex-president convicted of drug trafficking pardoned
He also pardoned former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who was serving a 45-year prison sentence in the United States for involvement in drug trafficking. Asfura and Hernández belong to the same party.
Asfura wants to implement large infrastructure projects and work more closely with the USA. The 67-year-old building contractor also announced that he would break off diplomatic relations with China in order to support the democratic island republic of Taiwan again. (sda/dpa)
