A group of authors led by investigative journalist John Carreyrou has sued several technology companies such as Google, OpenAI and Meta.
The accused companies have not yet commented on the lawsuits. (symbol image)Image: keystone
They accuse the companies of illegally using their copyrighted books to train artificial intelligence (AI). Carreyrou is known for exposing fraud at the US blood testing startup Theranos. The lawsuit, filed on Monday (local time) in California, is also directed against Elon Musk’s company xAI.
The authors are deliberately not seeking a class action lawsuit. Such procedures would benefit the defendant companies because they could negotiate a single settlement with many plaintiffs, the lawsuit says. Carreyrou had previously sharply criticized the actions of AI companies and described the unauthorized use of books as an original sin of the industry. Statements from the defendant companies were initially not available. (sda/apa/reuters)
