He is said to have given the Hitler salute in the Bundestag and clicked his heels together – now the Berlin public prosecutor’s office has brought charges against a member of the right-wing populist AfD party.

Germany’s parliament had previously lifted the immunity of 60-year-old Matthias Moosdorf, who denies the allegations, in October. The investigators accuse him of using unconstitutional license plates.
Specifically, on June 22, 2023, during an ongoing session of the Bundestag in Berlin, Moosdorf is said to have greeted a party colleague with the forbidden gesture in the cloakroom area at the east entrance to the Reichstag building – the seat of the German Parliament. When asked, he said: “The accusation is bizarre, and nothing is more absurd than this accusation.”
Moosdorf has recently also had trouble within the faction. In mid-September, the former foreign policy spokesman for the AfD parliamentary group was obliged to pay an internal party fine of 2,000 euros after an unauthorized trip to Russia. (sda/dpa)
