Democrat Eileen Higgins won the mayoral election, which was brought into the national spotlight by US President Donald Trump.
She prevailed against the Republican Emilio Gonzalez with almost 60 percent. According to a report in the New York Times, 61-year-old Higgins is the first woman to lead the city and the first non-Hispanic city leader since the 1990s. For the past three decades, Cuban-American Republicans have dominated city politics.
A few days ago, Trump got involved in the otherwise not so decisive election campaign. The mayoral election in Miami is “a big and important election!!!,” wrote Trump on his Truth Social platform. «Vote for Republican Gonzalez. He’s AMAZING!”
Democrats saw the victory as a further sign of a change in mood after successes in gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia and the mayoral election in the metropolis of New York. (sda/dpa)
