There has apparently been an attempted coup in Benin, West Africa. Shots were fired near the presidential palace, according to a post from the French Embassy in Cotonou on platform
The country’s borders are closed, Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri has been appointed president of a “Military Reconstruction Committee”, according to the appearance of uniformed military officers.
The situation in the country was initially confusing. Other military sources said the president was safe and the situation was under control. The information provided by both sides could not initially be verified.
Both the US embassy and the French embassy called on their compatriots to stay in their homes as a precaution. (sda/dpa)
