The German party “Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht” will in future be called “Alliance for Social Justice and Economic Reason”. The federal party conference in Magdeburg decided on this. It should stay with the abbreviation BSW. Two other name variants did not find a majority at the party conference. The name change should not take effect until October 1, 2026. This is justified by the upcoming election campaigns next year.
The party had announced a long time ago that it would choose a name other than that of founder Sahra Wagenknecht. In the early days, personalization served as recognition for the party, which was only founded in 2024. But it was said that this was not intended to be permanent from the start. The party leadership suggested the name now chosen.

The BSW as a whole is facing a turning point. Not only is the name changed, founder Wagenknecht is also withdrawing from the party leadership. At the party conference, the BSW is looking for a common line on political orientation and the question of whether it would like to participate in government in the future.
The party had initial successes in the European elections and the state elections in Thuringia, Brandenburg and Saxony in 2024. She also rules in Brandenburg and Thuringia. However, in the federal election in February 2025, it narrowly failed to meet the five percent hurdle. She has so far had no success with her request to have the votes counted again. (sda/dpa)
