According to media reports, the US Federal Police FBI has arrested a suspect who is said to have planted pipe bombs in the US capital Washington before the storming of the Capitol in 2021. It is a man from the US state of Virginia, reported ABC News and Fox News, among others, citing people familiar with the matter.
Accordingly, the arrested man is said to have placed the pipe bombs near the Democratic and Republican party headquarters the night before the storming of the Capitol. The motive is unclear.
Only discovered after the storming of the Capitol
On January 6, 2021, supporters of Donald Trump stormed the Capitol, which is the seat of the US Parliament. They wanted to prevent Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election from being officially confirmed there. Trump, who was defeated at the time, gave a speech on the same day in which he claimed that massive election fraud had deprived him of a victory. The storm on the heart of US democracy had shaken the country.
According to media reports, the bomber planted the explosives outside the party headquarters. They were only discovered after the storming of the Capitol. The search for the bomber was unsuccessful for almost five years. Just in October of this year, the FBI offered a reward of up to $500,000 for information that could help catch the person. (sda/dpa)
