A suspected thief swallowed a gem-encrusted Fabergé egg in New Zealand. The police arrested him in the store.

The police in New Zealand has arrested a man who is said to have stolen a gold Fabergé egg encrusted with gemstones from a jewelry store. According to police, the man picked up the piece of jewelry and swallowed it. The incident happened last week at a shop in central Auckland, the US broadcaster reports CNN.

Store employees called the police around 3:30 p.m. Emergency services arrived a few minutes later and arrested the suspect in the store. According to police, it is a 32-year-old man.
Police observe man under medical supervision
The man was charged with theft and is in custody. A court appearance is scheduled for December 8th. According to police, the man was medically examined and has been monitored continuously since then.
Police spokesman Grae Anderson told CNN that the surveillance was carried out out of a duty of care. “As this man is in police custody, we have a duty of care and must continue to monitor him given the circumstances that have occurred,” Anderson said.
