General searches
It was a turbulent year, as the Google searches also show. At the top of the list is Charlie Kirk, who died in an assassination attempt in the USA. The natural disaster in Blatten and the events surrounding the conflict between Israel and Iran were also on the agenda. But it’s not just tragic headlines that determine search trends, but also social events such as the Women’s European Football Championship or the ESAF.

Headlines
We already know the first three search terms of the most searched headlines. Directly behind this are search queries about the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), which took place in Basel in May. Our editor-in-chief probably influenced the list a bit.
The papal election also made it onto the list, otherwise negative headlines dominated, such as the Air India plane crash or the knife attack in Aschaffenburg.

Why questions
We often ask Google questions that we don’t dare ask in real life. Or simply things we simply don’t know. A small selection of them:
- Why is there a fire in Los Angeles?
- Why is the sky so cloudy?
- Why is Cucurella booed?
- Why is Israel attacking Iran?
- Why isn’t Alisha Lehmann playing at the European Championships?
- Why is Australia at the ESC?
- Why does Trump want Greenland?
- Why does Sarkozy have to go to prison?
- Why don’t I lose weight?
- Why is Elton no longer on “Who knows something like that”?
Since the 2024 European Championship quarter-finals between Germany and Spain, when his alleged handball in the penalty area was not punished, Marc Cucurella has been consistently whistled on German soil.Image: keystone

Luckily, Google knows: Tralalero Tralala is a term from the Internet trend “Italian Brainrot”. It is the name for an AI-generated character that looks like a shark, but has feet instead of fins and wears sneakers. The term itself has no literal meaning. “Gooning” is a slang term for masturbation that is mainly used in youth language.
By the way, squid have three hearts – a central heart that pumps blood through the body and to the head, and two others that circulate blood through the gills. They need this extra heart power to supply their body with enough oxygen, even when moving quickly.
And another fun fact: Your blood is blue because it uses copper instead of iron to bind oxygen. (cst)
