A cyclone has severely devastated Sri Lanka. At least 130 people have died as a result of cyclone “Ditwah” and more than 170 people are missing, the disaster management center announced on Saturday. The storm caused heavy rain in parts of the island nation, leading to flooding and landslides.
Rescue and search teams continued their search for missing people in landslide-affected areas. The central districts of Kandy and Badulla were particularly affected. Numerous train routes, roads as well as power and telecommunications lines were damaged, significantly affecting the everyday lives of many people.
Air traffic has not been spared either: flights to and from Sri Lanka had to be restricted and some planes were diverted to India.
The island state has been experiencing persistent heavy rain for three days. The cyclone continued towards southern India on Saturday morning. (sda/dpa)
