A man barely survived the attack and was flown to a hospital, police in the state of New South Wales said. The incident occurred in Crowdy Bay near Kylies Beach campsite, around 350 kilometers north of Sydney. Both victims were said to be in their 20s. Authorities say the two knew each other.

It was said that the emergency services were called to the beach early in the morning (local time). Meanwhile, eyewitnesses had already provided first aid. The woman died before the emergency doctors arrived. “A big compliment to the passer-by on the beach who tied off the man’s leg and probably saved his life,” the ABC broadcaster quoted a spokesman for the emergency services as saying.
Search with drones
It was initially unclear what type of shark it was. Authorities attempted to spot the shark. Local organizations helped with the search using drones. “Hopefully the shark responsible can be identified,” said Police Chief Timothy Bayly. The beaches in the region have been temporarily closed.
According to official data, three people died in shark attacks in Australia in the first half of the year. In September, a surfer died in an attack in a Sydney suburb. Three species native to the region are particularly dangerous to humans: tiger sharks, bull sharks and great white sharks. (sda/dpa)
