The Ukrainian citizen is said to have helped the two main suspects on the run in preparing the attack, a spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office said. According to the findings, he led his compatriots to the railway line in September, introduced them to the area and showed them where they should deposit the explosives.
In mid-November, the tracks on the strategically important railway line from Warsaw to Lublin were destroyed in an explosion. Because a train driver noticed and reported the damage, no one was injured. Further damage was found on the same route.
The main suspects have fled to Belarus
Investigators believe that two Ukrainian citizens, aged 39 and 41, carried out the sabotage on behalf of Russian secret services. After the crime, they are said to have crossed the border into Belarus. The authoritarian country is an ally of Moscow.
In the EU and NATO country Poland, which is one of the closest political and military allies of Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia, there has been fear of Russian acts of sabotage since the beginning of the war. The railway network in particular is considered a possible target, as many military transports to Ukraine run via Poland to the neighboring country. The affected route leads from the capital Warsaw to the border town of Dorohusk and from there on to Ukraine. (sda/dpa)
