At least three people were killed and several injured in an accident on a motorway that was slippery due to the weather near Maxhütte-Haidhof in southern Germany. In the northwest of the country, snowfall on Monday night also caused numerous ice accidents. Snow fell in places in the capital Berlin and clearing vehicles were in use.
According to current police findings, two trucks and a car were involved in the fatal accident on Autobahn 93 in the Upper Palatinate in the state of Bavaria early in the morning. The cause of the accident was initially unclear; according to the police, the highway was slippery due to the weather. It was unclear whether it was icy ice caused by frozen rain or snow.
Motorway towards Munich closed
There may be other vehicles involved, but this is not yet certain. At least one other truck and a car could be involved in the accident, but this has yet to be determined. According to current police findings, six people were sitting in a car that crashed. There was still no information about the identity of the dead.
The highway north of Regensburg was closed in the direction of Regensburg after the accident between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. This will remain the case for several hours, the spokesman said. Diversions have been set up, but they are already overloaded. (dab/sda/dpa)
