According to a report, the USA wants to bypass the Danish government in order to establish direct contacts with the Greenland government. As the newspaper “politiken” reports, the USA has repeatedly tried to organize a meeting with the Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen since April – excluding Danish government staff. Nielsen was elected in April of this year.
Political practice in the Kingdom of Denmark is that both Danish and Greenlandic representatives must be present at discussions when foreign, security or defense issues affecting Greenland are discussed.
The Greenlandic government rejected the American request for a bilateral meeting, Politics continued. The newspaper relies on sources from the USA, Greenland and Denmark. The White House did not comment specifically in response to a written request from the newspaper about possible meetings between American and Greenlandic representatives, but reiterated Greenland’s strategic importance to the United States.
Cooperation with the USA is not ruled out
At the beginning of the year, US President Donald Trump repeatedly claimed ownership of the world’s largest island for months. The debate about this has died down somewhat at the moment, but Trump’s position has not changed since then. The ice island with its almost 56,000 inhabitants is largely autonomous, but officially belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark.
In the past, Nielsen also did not rule out the possibility of being open to respectful cooperation with the USA under certain conditions. Cooperation with the USA does not rule out moving closer to the Europeans. The most important thing is that it benefits the Greenlandic population as much as possible, said Nielsen. (sda/dpa)
