Drug investigators in Colombia have made the largest cocaine discovery in ten years, confiscating 14 tons of the drug. The cocaine was discovered hidden between bags of plaster in a warehouse in the port of Buenaventura, the Ministry of Defense in Bogotá announced on Friday (local time).
The seizure took place “without a single death,” wrote President Gustavo Petro on the online service
Since September, US forces have repeatedly attacked boats belonging to alleged drug smugglers in the Caribbean and the Eastern Pacific. According to a count by the AFP news agency, at least 83 people have been killed and more than 20 ships sunk. Critics describe the attacks as violating international law.
A few weeks ago, US President Donald Trump insulted his Colombian colleague Petro as a “gangster and a bad guy”, accused him – without providing any evidence – of being involved in drug trafficking and imposed sanctions against him. Petro, in turn, criticized the US actions against alleged drug smuggling boats as “extrajudicial executions”.
Colombia is the largest cocaine producer in the world. According to United Nations data, coca is grown on around 253,000 hectares in the South American country and at least 2,600 tons of cocaine are produced annually. (sda/afp)
