The Louvre in Paris, which was hit by a spectacular theft, is to get a mobile police station. The details are currently being discussed with the responsible ministries, said museum director Laurence des Cars on Wednesday before a parliamentary committee of inquiry.
100 new surveillance cameras will also be installed in the museum by the end of the year.
Since the theft a month ago, in which crown jewels with a material value of around 88 million euros were lost, the director has admitted several times that the huge museum’s equipment with video cameras was a “weak point”. She also announced that she would appoint a security officer for the museum. Barriers are to be erected around the Louvre from December to prevent vehicles from being parked.
On October 19, the thieves used a freight elevator to get so close to the facade that they were able to easily break into one of the windows.
The museum director also defended President Emmanuel Macron’s plans to provide the Louvre with a new entrance and a separate exhibition room for the “Mona Lisa”. Half of the planned work involves renovating outdated facilities, she said.
A few days ago, the Louvre closed one of its galleries to visitors after several beams were found to be unstable. The museum is currently investigating the causes of the instability. 65 employees had to vacate their workplaces.
The Louvre is the most visited museum in the world and covers an area of 37 hectares in the center of Paris. There are 35,000 works on display, 2,200 security guards on duty and nine million visitors every year. (sda/afp)
