India’s government has classified the deadly car explosion two days ago in the capital New Delhi as a terrorist attack. The country witnessed a “despicable terrorist incident” that was carried out by subversive forces, according to a cabinet resolution. It was not said who these forces might be or what evidence there was of an attack. The resolution was released after a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The participants in the meeting called for rapid investigations so that the “perpetrators, their collaborators and supporters are immediately identified and brought to justice.” The situation is being closely monitored at the highest levels of government. India’s resolve to pursue a policy of zero tolerance towards all forms of terrorism is unwavering, it said.
Several dead and injured
The explosion on Monday evening in a busy area of New Delhi killed nine people, according to reports from the broadcaster NDTV, which cited officials. Another 20 people were injured. Interior Minister Amit Shah had previously spoken of at least eight deaths. No casualty figures were mentioned in the Cabinet resolution.
The incident caused great horror in the world’s most populous country. The police had already announced on Tuesday that they were investigating a terrorist attack. The investigations are still at an early stage.
Explosion near tourist attraction
The incident took place near the historic Red Fort. The car exploded in front of the entrance to the Lal Quila (Red Fort) metro station, which leads directly to the busy old market district of Chandni Chowk. The massive 17th-century palace complex, which was closed on Monday, is across the street. Both the market and the complex are well-known tourist attractions.
According to Indian media reports, it would be the first such attack in New Delhi since September 2011, when 15 people were killed in a bomb attack outside the Supreme Court. (sda/dpa)
