The day before, the paramilitary militia Rapid Support Forces (RSF) agreed to a humanitarian ceasefire. This was negotiated by a group of mediators led by the USA and which also includes the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia and Egypt. However, the army’s consent is still pending.
The US government’s advisor for Africa, Massad Boulos, said earlier this week that both sides had supported the Proposing a three-month humanitarian ceasefire shown openly. At the same time, a nine-month negotiation phase is being discussed. At the beginning of the conflict in 2023, ceasefires had failed several times.
The RSF began attacks against military and civilians in April 2023 because they refused to be integrated into the army. They’ve had them ever since Darfur region in western Sudan almost completely conquered. They control about half of Sudan’s populated area. According to experts, the UAE is supporting them with weapons, among other things, which they deny.
A humanitarian ceasefire could help millions of civilians in dire need. The situation in the North African country is considered to be that currently the largest humanitarian crisis in the world. Both sides of the conflict are accused of war crimes and serious human rights violations, which the army and the RSF deny. (rbu/sda/dpa)
