Most recently, the military and police discovered four drones on Sunday evening, as reported by the Belgian news agency Belga, citing the local mayor, Steven Matheï. A police helicopter followed them, but after a while they disappeared north towards the Netherlands.

There had already been several drone sightings at the military base. On Sunday night, for example, “larger models at a higher altitude” did not simply fly over the military base, but were specifically aimed at it, wrote Belgium’s Defense Minister Theo Francken on Platform X. A jammer was used unsuccessfully, Francken continued. “A helicopter and police vehicles tracked a drone but lost it after several kilometers.” The investigation was ongoing.
Francken wrote after previous sightings on Saturday that they would meet with the police next week to analyze the threat and take the necessary measures to find and arrest the drone pilots.
NATO referred inquiries about the drone sightings to the Belgian authorities. In October, the military base in Kleine-Brogel, Flemish, was part of the annual NATO exercise to defend the alliance’s territory with nuclear weapons with around 2,000 military personnel. According to unconfirmed reports, the air base is one of the locations in Europe where US nuclear weapons are stored.
A drone was also spotted over Antwerp Airport on Saturday evening, as reported by the Belgian news agency Belga, citing the police. (sda/dpa)
