They are among the US President’s favorite enemies Donald Trump: TV comedians. Since taking office for the second time in January, Trump has met with show greats Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel. The latter even briefly lost his show on ABC, after criticizing the Trump administration’s handling of the death of far-right influencer Charlie Kirk. Now Trump is targeting the next television legend: satirist Seth Meyers.

Meyers is the “least talented person to ever appear on live television,” Trump wrote about the host after watching his show “Late Night with Seth Meyers” on NBC. Meyers talked endlessly about electric catapults on aircraft carriers, “which I think are less good than the much cheaper steam-powered catapults,” Trump said on his platform Truth Social. “It went on like this, a really disturbed lunatic,” Trump insulted the moderator.
How the Trump administration is cracking down on critics
But the explosive part comes at the end of Trump’s post. “Why is NBC wasting time and money on a guy like that???,” Trump asks: “NO TALENT, 100% ANTI-TRUMP, WHICH IS PROBABLY ILLEGAL!!!,” Trump ends the post in capital letters. The fact that criticism of the president is “probably illegal” in Trump’s opinion should not only concern Seth Meyers.

The Trump administration repeatedly tries to eliminate criticism and unpleasant positions, for example by suing media companies and universities or by expelling unpleasant journalists from the White House and the Defense Department. Trump’s attacks against TV comedians also fit into this pattern: In the highly polarized media landscape USA They are considered particularly credible and have a greater influence on opinion formation than in Germany, for example.
It is unclear whether Trump’s attack will have consequences for Seth Meyers. The moderator himself has not yet responded to Trump’s post on Saturday (local time). In the case of Jimmy Kimmel, ABC reversed its decision after a few days and is now letting his show continue. Stephen Colbert, however, had a different story.
The CBS broadcaster will discontinue its “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” at the end of May 2026. Officially it was said for financial reasons. Critics suspect that the decision is a concession from CBS to Trump. He had threatened the parent company Paramount with a lawsuit because of allegedly too positive reporting on his competitor Kamala Harris in the presidential election campaign.
