Russia is interested in a peaceful settlement of the conflict between the USA and Venezuela. “Of course we want everything to remain peaceful and no new conflicts arise in the region,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov in Moscow, according to the state news agency Tass.
Is Maduro asking for military aid from Moscow?
Tass called the statements the Kremlin’s response to a report in the US newspaper “Washington Post”. Accordingly, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is said to have asked Moscow for military assistance, especially anti-aircraft defense. Russia and the authoritarian oil state Venezuela in Latin America, led by Maduro, have signed a partnership agreement. It came into force last week, but – as far as is known – does not provide for military assistance.
For weeks, US forces have repeatedly attacked boats allegedly loaded with drugs in the Caribbean and the Pacific. US President Donald Trump’s leadership accuses Venezuela in particular of being involved in smuggling. The US military has deployed additional warships to the region, which the Venezuelan government is not the only one who sees this as a threatening gesture. (sda/dpa)
