Iran says it is committed to rebuilding nuclear facilities damaged by Israeli and US attacks in June. “The government is fully committed to the progress of the nuclear industry and our young scientists have the necessary skills to resolutely continue nuclear reconstruction,” said President Massud Peseschkian, according to the Tasnim news agency.
He once again emphasized that Iran is not pursuing a nuclear weapons program, but wants to use nuclear energy for civilian purposes. Corresponding insinuations from the West are “a lie” designed to block scientific progress in Iran, said Peseschkian.
Israel sees Iran’s nuclear program as an existential threat and waged war against Iran for twelve days in June. In Israeli and US attacks, central facilities in the nuclear program were bombed. There are different reports on the extent of the destruction at the nuclear facilities. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that Iran’s nuclear capabilities have been “obliterated.” Iran’s government spoke of severe damage.
Iran no longer cooperates with the International Atomic Energy Agency
Since Tehran has since stopped cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), there is no reliable information about the extent of the destruction or the status of reconstruction.
Peseschkian has repeatedly emphasized that the production of weapons of mass destruction is prohibited in Iran for religious reasons. Nevertheless, the West fears that Tehran could pursue a nuclear weapons program due to large quantities of highly enriched uranium.
In 2015, Iran committed to restricting its nuclear program in an agreement. After the United States withdrew from the pact during President Trump’s first term, Tehran no longer complied with the restrictions. Recently, talks to save the agreement failed. UN sanctions against Iran were subsequently reactivated at the initiative of Germany, France and Great Britain. (sda/dpa)
